The use of CCTV in Crime Prevention
- Deterrence – The potential offender becomes aware of the presence of CCTV, assesses the risks of offending in this location to outweigh the benefits and chooses either not to offend or to offend elsewhere.
- Self discipline by potential victims. They are reminded of the ‘risk’ of crime, therefore altering their behaviour accordingly by potential offenders. The threat of potential surveillance (whether the cameras are actually being monitored may be irrelevant) acts to produce a self discipline through fear of surveillance, whether real or imagined.
- Efficient deployment CCTV cameras allow those monitoring the scene to determine whether police assistance is required. This ensures that police resources are called upon only when necessary.
- Presence of a capable guardian – The ‘Routine Activity Theory’ suggests that for a crime, there must be a motivated offender, a suitable target and the absence of a capable guardian. Any act that prevents the convergence of these elements will reduce the likelihood of a crime taking place. CCTV, as a capable guardian, may help to reduce crime.
FAQs
SV Security Systems staff have been installing CCTV for a combined time of 70 years! So what are the benefits…
Increased Deterrent – CCTV systems are a great deterrent to potential intruders/thieves. Once they realise that your home or business is protected by a CCTV system they invariably choose to go elsewhere.
Safer Working Environment – CCTV helps to ensure health and safety policies are being followed for staff and visitor safety.
Reduced Retail Theft – Thieves deliberately target businesses with old or no CCTV and will think twice if there is an increased risk they may be caught on camera.
Increased Detection – The prosecution rates for businesses/home owners using CCTV is many times higher than that for those without it. If you are a victim of crime there will be a strong chance of detection and conviction.
Eliminate False Insurance Claims – In an increasingly litigious society it has never been more important to protect your business against claims that are not legitimate. CCTV can eliminate this and reduce you premiums.
Remote Monitoring – Keep an eye on your home or business when you aren’t there. All our CCTV systems can be viewed and controlled remotely over the internet (via iPhone, laptop etc).
Reduced Fear Of Crime – Knowing you are well protected gives a feeling of security.
Staff Protection – CCTV is a great tool for preventing assaults and false crimes of misconduct.
The two main types of alarm system are wired and wireless. (see our wireless alarms link) The majority of our domestic installations are with wireless systems, which conform to the same PD6662:2010 standards. We currently install the Pyronix Enforcer wireless system (see www.pyronix.co.uk for more details). Our wired range of systems is also manufactured by Pyronix. The equipment is sign printed with our logos to give it the professional finish.
We offer monitoring services with all of our installations now so you no longer have to rely on a neighbour listening out for your alarm sounding. The monitoring devices from Dualcom (see www.csldual.com) use PSTN and GPRS technology to connect your alarm system to the monitoring station so that you know whatever the situation of your activities, you will always know first.
We install a range of systems which start from 4 channel domestic systems right up to integrated IP Systems comprising of 200 cameras. The minimum standard camera we install at SV Security Systems is a 1080p 4MP quality unit.
We don’t believe in putting our name to ‘cheap and cheerful’ systems because it simply makes us look bad. The range of equipment we install can be found a www.hikvision.com/uk
Our CCTV systems record for between 21-90 days, depending on the customer requirements (quality of recorded images and size of hard drive). After that time the system will then start recording over the earliest recordings so you will always have between 21-90 days worth of video footage stored, which is ideal for those who travel frequently.
Yes, this is discussed at the site survey phase. We connect 99% of our systems to our mobile app so that customers can view their CCTV live footage whilst away from home. The apps are password protected to ensure no one is monitoring your system without you knowing about it. You will of course need a broadband connection at home for us to connect into. If the router is in a different room to the NVR then we can fit a TP link (ethernet over mains).
Infrared (IR) Night Vision allows your CCTV camera to see in the dark. This is achieved by using the camera’s built-in IR LED’s. The Infrared light provides to illumination required to capture the images in total darkness or low-light conditions. We have fitted Hikvision ColorVu technology cameras for the last few years, which enable the camera to stay in colour 24 hours a day to give an enhanced picture quality at night time.
No signs need to be displayed for domestic customers, however if a system is installed on a commercial property then adequate warning signs stating who the installer and operator is must be displayed for data protection purposes, which we provide with an installation.
